Why Should You Replace Your Windows?

Energy Costs

Window technology has come a long way, and replacement windows are more energy efficient than ever. For example, here’s an energy efficiency problem that’s common with old windows in the summer.

Old windows tend to let in a lot of UV-rays. This introduces extra heat into your home, which can increase your cooling costs and result in fading of furniture and carpets. If your home has old windows on it, you may be paying more in energy costs than you need to.

Low-E coatings allow windows to block out long-wave UV-rays in the summer to prevent excess heat from entering your home. In the winter, they allow short-wave UV-rays into your home. Short-waves carry less heat than long waves, but the once they’re inside, the windows actually prevent them from escaping back outside. This allows heat to build up in the room.

Moisture Problems

Old windows can also be the source of moisture problems. As windows age, their components can deteriorate. This could potentially allow moisture into your home, which could cause damage to the area of the wall surrounding the window. Depending on the severity of the damage, you may have to replace not just the window, but a portion of the wall as well.

Sound Reduction

New windows are also better at sound reduction, which reduces the amount of ambient noise from outside that makes it inside. This is especially useful if you live next to a busy street, or in an area with a high-volume of foot traffic.

Some old window designs are not safe if you have young children in your home. For example, an open single hung window presents a serious safety hazard for young children. Replacing single hung windows with double hung windows eliminates this safety hazard. This is due to a locking system that prevents the window from opening past a certain point, giving you peace of mind as well as fresh air.

Easier to Clean

Grids between the glass makes cleaning replacement windows easier. They can also tilt into the house, making it easier to clean those hard-to-reach areas that otherwise might have been neglected.

Better Aesthetics

Aside from all the functional benefits of new windows, there’s also the benefit of a better look! Old windows can make the exterior of your home look older than it needs to. New windows can make your home look rejuvenated and increase its curb appeal.
