Memorial Day (and Fourth of July) Decorating Tips

It’s time to break out the red, white, and blue again! Exterior decorations aren’t just for the winter holidays– with Memorial Day in May and Independence Day in July, there’s plenty of reasons to celebrate. Here are some decorating tips for this summer’s patriotic holidays!

The Stars and Stripes

You can’t go wrong with a classic! Unsurprisingly, the most popular Fourth of July decoration is the American flag, with miniature replicas handed out to kids along parade routes for waving (and hopefully not swordfighting…). If you happen to have a full-sized rendition laying around, now’s the time of year to hoist it high! You can also buy red, white, and blue banners to hang across your porch and deck railings.

Wreaths and Flowers

Want to repurpose those Christmas wreaths? Now’s your chance! Use colored ribbons to turn winter greenery into star-spangled festivity and decorate your doors or windows. As for real plants, consider planning for red, white, and blue flowers in your garden or planters this spring. We’re not saying you have to replicate the flag through floral arrangements, but serious props to anyone with that much of a green thumb!

Edible Embellishments

Food can be just as decorative as streamers and balloons! If you’re throwing a Fourth of July barbecue, break out the red, white, and blue fruit along with the starry tablecloths and napkins. Don’t stop at the pre-made popsicles– fruit platters, dessert trays, and more can give an element of culinary style to your celebration. They do say it’s healthy to eat multicolored food…

Take the Time to Thank Service Members

Lest we forget among the fireworks and summer barbecues, Memorial Day is one of remembrance for those who have given their lives through military service. Even if you have not had any service members in your life, take the time to thank those in your community who have served. Hang a sign in your window or write a message at the end of your driveway just as a small way of saying thanks, or hold a moment of silence with your family to remember those we’ve lost. From pilots and soldiers to army doctors and translators, there are so many people who work to make the world a better place.
