Your End-of-the-Year Home Checklist

Before you set your New Year’s resolutions, it’s time to wrap up the year at home!  By addressing all of those to-do items that got pushed to the end of the list in 2018, you can enter 2019 with a fresh start.  Not to mention a clean, secure home.  While your checklist may look a little different, we think these points are pretty universal!

Double Check Your Security

Unfortunately, holiday spirit isn’t the only thing on the rise this time of year.  So are crime rates—and break-ins in particular.  So, now’s a great time to thoroughly check your home’s exterior for security risks.  Look at your doors, windows, garages, basement entryways, etc. searching for any potential signs of weakness.  Reinforce any loose locks, work to close existing gaps, and consider installing some high-tech features to help you.  Even a simple motion-activated flood light could be enough to deter criminals and keep your home safe into the new year!

Protect Your Home Systems

Whether it’s your plumbing, HVAC, or electrical components—when was the last time you looked at any of them?  Typically, these features fall under the category of “if it ain’t broke…”. We take them for granted until they don’t work.  Which is why we’re adding them to your end-of-the-year checklist.  You don’t have to be an expert to inspect the areas where these systems are most vulnerable.  Anytime they’re exposed to the elements in winter, you’re leaving yourself vulnerable to damage.  So, be sure to put away those hoses, turn off the outdoor valves, and don’t be afraid to call in the professionals if you notice something you can’t fix.  With the proper servicing, all systems will help you welcome the new year.

Rooftop Reinforcement

Well, Santa and his reindeer are all finished clicking, but we’ve still got a long winter (and a new year) ahead of us!  Look at your roof to ensure it’ll make it.  Consider the shingles, the gutters, the downspouts, etc.  Anything that appears loose, clogged, or otherwise fragile should be reinforced right away.  Once you’ve crossed this particular task off your list, though, you may have to add it back on.  The condition of your roof can rapidly change, depending on what winter weather we get.  In Maryland, it could be snow, sleet, rain, or wind.  Or some combination of all of the above.  Plan on checking your roof after each big winter storm—especially when ice is involved.  This heavy form of water has a way of collecting in the most inconvenient of places. It can even cause your roof to collapse if you’re not careful!  Just stay on top of it and be sure to call in our professional roofers when the project calls for it.

Of course, we could go on and on, but there are only a few days left in 2018!  Try to wrap up as much as you can at home before the new year begins, but also give yourself time to relax.  For our part, all of us at Schaefer Exteriors just want to thank you for another great year.  Our business wouldn’t be what it is without the loyalty of our wonderful customers throughout the Mid-Atlantic.  If you need any help, (with this checklist or anything else) contact our team.  Here’s to making 2019 even better!
