5 Signs that You Need New Gutters

New Gutters

When is it time to switch to brand new gutters? Learn what signs to watch out for below.

Properly functioning gutters are a very important part of a home, directing water away from the walls of your home and keeping it from getting inside. Regular maintenance of your gutters will ensure their maximum longevity, but they won’t last forever. Eventually, all gutter systems will need to be replaced in order to keep your home protected from potential water damage. There are five signs in particular that will tell you that you need new gutters.

1. Sagging

One of the easiest ways to determine that you need new gutters is by checking and seeing whether your current gutters are sagging or pulling away from your home. Sagging usually means either that there is a blockage, the gutters aren’t draining properly, or they are not appropriate for the home’s needs.

2. Cracks and Splits

Small cracks in a gutter system may not seem like a big issue, but those small cracks can lead to much bigger problems in the future. Allowing cracks to remain can damage the gutters even further and can also lead to damage in the fascia boards behind them and the shingles above them. These small cracks can turn into big ones sooner than you might think, so have them checked out as soon as you notice them.

3. Peeling Paint

Gutter paint is designed to last through the regular wear and tear of the seasons. If you notice peeling paint or orange flecks and your gutters aren’t already very old, it may indicate that water is continuously present in your system and not being removed properly.

4. Pools of Water or Mildew Around the Home’s Foundation

Gutters are also designed to keep water away from your home’s foundation. If they’re not doing so and you start to notice any pools of water or signs of mildew around the foundation, you should get this checked out as soon as possible as any damage to your home’s foundation will require costly and time-consuming repairs.

5. Water Damage or Water Marks Underneath the Gutters

Once a year on a day that is sunny and free of rain, check the undersides of your gutters. If you notice any water damage or marks, it may be a sign that the water is leaking or overflowing, and in the long run can cause damage to the soffit and fascia board.
