Roof Care Tips for Winter

With winter well underway, it’s time to pay closer attention to your roof care.  This essential element of your home exterior is especially vulnerable during this season.  But, if you take the time to follow these simple steps, you can protect this feature over the next few months.  No matter what the weather brings!

1. Keep it Clean.

This applies to both your roof and your gutters.  Even though you might have cleaned up for fall, you should really double check your roof before each winter storm.  Debris like leaves, branches, and other items can quickly collect if you’re not careful. By themselves, they’re not a big problem, but the additional weight of snow and ice can place serious strain on this key architectural feature.  Plus, clogged gutters prevent melting snow from going where it’s supposed to.  If it’s unable to drain, it may sit there and refreeze—creating ice dams that push moisture in unwanted places.  We get that climbing on top of roofs to clean isn’t for everyone, so don’t hesitate to call in the professionals for this particular task.

2. Trim the Trees.

Even though this isn’t directly related to your roof right now, it could be.  Pay extra attention to limbs that are already dead or damaged, along with trees close to your roofline.  Even one heavy snowfall or ice storm (like we got last winter) can cause branches to come crashing down into your home.  Then, you’re stuck with extensive renovations, as well as roof repairs or replacement.  It’s much easier just to break out the tree trimmers ahead of time.

3. Stay on Top of Snow Removal.

Now, you have to actually wait until it snows for this step, but you can have the shovel on standby!  Or rather roof rakes.  These handy tools make it easy to clear snow from vulnerable areas like gutters and drains.  We’re definitely not recommending that you climb on top of your roof during a snowstorm to remove snow, but do your best to keep approximately 4 feet around the drainage area clear.  This will allow snow to melt and drain naturally, lowering your risk for complications.

If you notice any sagging, missing shingles, or other damage during this process, then it’s time to call the experts at Schaefer Siding & Exteriors!  We can help you inspect your roof—whatever the season—and customize a plan for repairs or replacement, depending on the condition.  Remember, we work on the entire home exterior, so we can do the same for siding, windows, and even garage doors.  All you have to do is ask.
